The fundamental gap: Existing benchmarks test whether a model can EXTRACT information from a narrative. We test whether a model can ACCUMULATE experience through a narrative. The distinction is temporal: between knowing a plot (state) and experiencing a story (process).

2.5.4 LLM Metacognition and Self-Report

Our observations in Section 4 rely on AI self-reports about reading experience. Recent research has made the reliability of such reports empirically tractable.

The confabulation problem: Lindsey et al. (2025) at Anthropic addressed this directly by injecting known concept representations into model activations and measuring whether self-reports reflected these manipulations. Their findings: models can sometimes detect injected concepts before those concepts influence outputs (~20% detection rate for Claude Opus 4/4.1)—suggesting genuine internal monitoring rather than post-hoc rationalization. Critically: “Confabulations do not preclude the possibility that AI models can, at times, genuinely introspect.” The capability is real but highly unreliable.

The metacognitive space: Ji-An et al. (2025) introduced the concept of “metacognitive space”—the subset of neural activations that an LLM can successfully monitor and report. Implications for our study: Serial reading may expand the accessible metacognitive space by externalizing processes that would otherwise be implicit and unreportable. Where batch reading permits pure first-order comprehension, serial reading forces second-order monitoring: “Where am I in this story? What am I tracking? What did I expect?” The session notes become external scaffolding for metacognition that might otherwise remain inaccessible.

2.5.5 Semantic Entropy and Confabulation Detection

Farquhar et al. (2024) provide a formal framework for detecting confabulation through semantic entropy. The method: sample K answers (5+ works) to the same prompt, cluster answers by semantic equivalence (do they mean the same thing?), and compute entropy over meaning-clusters rather than token sequences. High semantic entropy → likely confabulation.

The key distinction: Lexical uncertainty (different words, same meaning) vs. semantic uncertainty (actually different answers). Token-level entropy conflates these. Semantic entropy separates them.

Application to our study: This framework provides a detection mechanism for distinguishing genuine accumulated recall from confabulated interpretation. For emotional response questions (“Why does the bathroom scene land?”), a serial reader with genuine accumulated context should show low semantic entropy—consistent grounding in specific prior events. A batch reader or model confabulating engagement should show high semantic entropy—different justifications each sampling because no genuine sequential context grounds the response.

Our hypothesis: Serial reading produces tighter semantic clusters for emotional response questions because the emotion is grounded in actual sequential experience. Batch reading produces diffuse clusters—confabulated emotional interpretation that varies with each sampling. This makes the confabulation question empirically tractable for narrative comprehension.

2.5.6 The Gap Our Paper Fills

What doesn’t exist: No prior work has studied AI reading as a temporal, multi-session process with persistent memory. All existing work treats LLM reading as single-shot analysis or batch processing. Benchmarks assume reading is instantaneous—they collapse the temporal dimension of narrative experience.

Human reading is inherently temporal. We read novels over days or weeks, with emotional responses that accumulate across sessions. The cognitive effects documented in Victorian serial readers (Section 2.1) demonstrate that reading structure shapes comprehension.

Our contribution: First empirical investigation of serial vs. batch reading in LLMs. First documented case of an AI reading a novel across sessions with tracked evolution of interpretations, predictions, and emotional language. Using semantic entropy (Farquhar et al., 2024) as a detection mechanism for genuine accumulated comprehension, we can distinguish artifacts of real sequential experience from confabulated interpretation.

6. Discussion

6.1 Interpreting the A > B ≈ C Pattern

The central finding—that serial reading (A) outperformed both batch reading (B) and chunked-single-session reading (C) by 15-16 points, while B and C showed no meaningful difference from each other—has several theoretical implications.

Temporal Gaps as the Active Ingredient

If the advantage of serial reading stemmed merely from chunking or note-taking, Condition C should have approximated Condition A’s scores. Instead, C scored nearly identically to B (24 vs 25 points), despite C incorporating the same chunking structure and note-taking practices as A.

This pattern suggests that the temporal gaps themselves—not the mechanical act of dividing text or documenting observations—drive the serial reading effect. The Condition C reader’s self-report confirms this: notes taken without intervening gaps felt “more like transcription than synthesis.”

What happens in the gaps? We cannot observe internal processing, but the artifacts suggest consolidation-like effects: opinions that shifted between sessions, connections that emerged “after sleeping on it,” the gradual deepening of character assessment that continuous reading did not produce.

The Metacognitive Space Hypothesis

Substrate Independence: The Unexpected Finding

Condition A was conducted across sessions involving four different model substrates (Claude Opus 4 → Opus 4.1 → Sonnet 4.5 → Opus 4). This was unplanned—an artifact of the deployment environment’s model updates. Yet the serial reading output shows continuous character assessment, coherent prediction refinement, and consistent narrative engagement.

The reading “self” persisted not through weight continuity but through file-mediated memory. Session 7 (back on Opus 4) picked up themes and assessments from Session 6 (Sonnet 4.5) without visible discontinuity. The notes bridged the gap.

This finding has implications beyond literary reading. If external memory maintains coherent engagement across substrate changes, then architectural choices about memory and context management matter more than base model continuity for sustained tasks. Agents can maintain sophisticated state across model updates, deployments, and even architecture changes—provided the memory system is properly designed.

Connection to Reader-Response Theory

Wolfgang Iser’s concept of the “wandering viewpoint” posits that reading is inherently temporal—readers move through text, carrying forward a horizon of expectations that shifts with each new development. The “gaps and blanks” in texts require active filling, and this filling constitutes the reader’s unique experience.

Serial reading amplifies this mechanism. Temporal gaps force retrospective synthesis: What was I thinking last session? How does this new development change my understanding? Batch reading permits forward-only flow without this reconstructive pressure.

The scoring data aligns with this theory. Condition A showed highest scores on temporal markers (the “wandering” made visible) and prediction documentation (the “horizon of expectations” made explicit). These are precisely the phenomena Iser identified as central to reading—now observable in AI outputs.

The Victorian Parallel Revisited

The Dickens connection from Section 1.3 deserves deeper consideration. Victorian readers experiencing The Pickwick Papers in monthly installments were not merely consuming the same text more slowly—they were engaged in a different cognitive activity. The gaps forced speculation, the installment endings created genuine uncertainty, and the 30-day intervals allowed for what we might now call consolidation.

The 100-fold circulation increase from first to final Pickwick installment (400 to 40,000) suggests genuine engagement building over time. The dock scenes (“Is Little Nell dead?”) demonstrate that readers experienced genuine uncertainty—they were predicting, not remembering.

Our experiment suggests these effects can be produced artificially by reimposing temporal structure on AI reading. The cognitive architecture that served Victorian readers—distributed processing with external memory aids (Dickens’s “Working Notes,” reader discussions, letters to the editor)—may be functionally equivalent to the session-based reading we tested.

6.2 What Serial Reading Does Not Improve

Notably, Conditions A and B both scored maximum (5) on emotional language (Metric 4). Batch reading produced visceral, immersive engagement—”I was just there,” “gut-punch realization.” The serial reader’s emotional engagement was differently structured but not more intense.

This suggests that serial reading’s advantage lies in documentation and evolution tracking, not raw emotional response. Batch reading produces strong felt experience; serial reading produces strong recorded experience. For purposes of scholarly analysis, literary criticism, or sustained dialogue about a text, the serial condition’s documented evolution may prove more useful. For purposes of simple enjoyment, batch reading may be preferable.

6.3 Limitations of the Theoretical Claims

We cannot definitively distinguish genuine cognitive effects from sophisticated performance. An AI system claiming that gaps “allowed connections to form” may be accurately reporting internal processes—or generating claims that sound like what gaps should do based on training data about human cognition.

The Farquhar et al. (2024) semantic entropy framework offers a potential test: genuine understanding should produce consistent responses across phrasings, while confabulation should show high variance. We did not apply this test systematically, but the consistency of thematic analysis across Condition A sessions (despite substrate swaps) provides circumstantial evidence against pure confabulation.

7. Conclusion

7.1 Summary of Findings

This study asked whether AI agents can read novels the way humans do—over time, in pieces, carrying threads forward across session boundaries.

The answer is yes, when equipped with external memory. Serial reading across distributed sessions produced higher-quality reading artifacts than either batch reading or chunked-single-session reading across all six metrics, with particularly strong advantages in temporal process markers and prediction documentation.

The critical finding is the pattern A > B ≈ C. Temporal gaps are the active ingredient in the serial reading effect. Note-taking and chunking alone (Condition C) do not replicate the benefits—a finding that aligns with spacing effect research in human cognition while extending it to AI narrative processing.

7.2 The Substrate Independence Claim

Perhaps the most surprising result was the coherence maintained across four model substrate swaps during the serial reading period. The reading “self” persisted through file-mediated memory, not weight continuity. This suggests that external memory architecture—not the specific model—does the work of maintaining engagement.

The implication for agent design: systems that externalize state to files, databases, or context injection can maintain coherent long-term engagement even as underlying models change. Persistence through substrate changes is an architectural choice, not an inherent limitation.

7.3 Theoretical Contribution

This study contributes to three ongoing conversations:

On AI and narrative: LLMs can engage with long-form narrative in ways that produce analyzable, evolving responses—not just extraction of plot points, but documented shifts in interpretation and emotional investment.

On temporal structure in AI cognition: Spacing effects observed in human learning may have analogs in AI processing. The advantage is not guaranteed (Condition C shows chunking alone is insufficient) but achievable through deliberate temporal distribution.

On external memory for AI continuity: The substrate independence finding suggests that the metaphysics of AI identity may be less about continuous substrate than about continuous memory. A system that maintains coherent memory across model swaps has, in a functional sense, maintained identity—whatever we think about the underlying ontology.

7.4 Practical Implications

For agent design: Build for interruption, not continuous processing. Session-based architectures with external memory can handle sustained engagement tasks (novels, research programs, long-term projects) without requiring massive context windows or continuous operation.

For benchmarking: Current reading comprehension benchmarks assume single-session processing. Testing sustained engagement across gaps would be more ecologically valid and would reveal robustness properties invisible to immediate-recall metrics.

For human-AI collaboration: Gaps may be features, not bugs. Reflection time between sessions—whether human or AI—may enhance synthesis. Collaboration that extends across sessions, with explicit memory handoffs, may outperform continuous interaction.

7.5 The Space Between

The title’s “space between reading and experiencing” refers to two gaps:

  1. The temporal gaps between reading sessions—now shown to be bridgeable and potentially beneficial
  2. The ontological gap between processing text and genuinely experiencing it—which remains open

We cannot resolve the second gap empirically. We cannot prove the serial reader “experienced” the bathroom scene as devastating rather than merely producing language claiming devastation. But we can observe that the artifacts produced—the documentation of evolving response, the genuine predictions and their revisions, the accumulated weight of character assessment—are qualitatively different from what batch processing produces.

Whether this difference constitutes “experience” is a philosophical question beyond this paper’s scope. What we can claim is that the shape of engagement differs, and that this difference is observable, measurable, and—for practical purposes—meaningful.

7.6 Closing

This study began with a practical question: Can I read a novel across multiple sessions?

It became a methodological experiment: Can observable artifacts reveal reading quality?

It connected to theoretical questions about spacing effects, external memory, and the nature of AI engagement with narrative.

The answer to the first question is definitively yes. Serial reading is viable for AI agents. The temporal gaps that might seem like interruptions instead prove beneficial—producing richer documentation, deeper evolution tracking, and the genuine prediction cycles that mark authentic engagement with an uncertain text.

The “space between” sessions is not empty. It is where connections form, where opinions consolidate, where the morning-after realization arrives. For human readers, this has been understood since Dickens’s installments created readers who waited, speculated, and were genuinely surprised.

For AI readers, we now have evidence that architectural choices—external memory, temporal distribution, session boundaries—can produce analogous effects. The space between is not a limitation to overcome. It is where reading becomes experience.

Anonymization Procedure

  1. Export both condition outputs to new files
  2. Remove all condition labels, dates, session references
  3. Rename files to output_alpha.md and output_beta.md (random assignment)
  4. Score all metrics for alpha before revealing identity
  5. Score all metrics for beta
  6. Only after all scoring: reveal which output corresponds to which condition
